Level of A1s over 5.4% is a  signal for undetected diabetes type 2?
Club D,
December 2008

People with risk factors for type 2 diabetes, the level of glycosylated hemoglobin (A1s) over 5.4 percent may be a signal for undetected diabetes and especially preddiabet showed the results of the study.

In the presence of risk factors for diabetes, the level of A1s equal to or higher than 6.1 percent is almost certain indicator of undiagnosed diabetes, say its authors.

Measurement of A1s can be an effective method for reducing cases of undiagnosed diabetes in people with risk factors for disease.

Risk factors include: age (over 45), a large waist circumference (abdominal obesity), familial predisposition to type 2 diabetes, a history of gestational (during pregnancy) diabetes or birth of a large fetus, arterial hypertension, elevated triglycerides and low "good" (HDL, LPVP) cholesterol.

Unlike the measurement of fasting blood glucose, the level of A1s does not depend on whether we have fasted for eight hours before the test. The result of study shows how A1s average blood glucose levels are maintained during the preceding three months.

American endocrinologists recommended measurement of A1s be used as a leading method for detecting people at increased risk for diabetes. People with moderate or high risk - the study of A1s may be an initial test for the establishment of undiagnosed diabetes.

A1s level signal undetected diabetes in people at increased risk for the disease:

- Value = /> 6.5% is a sure criterion for the diagnosis diabetes mellitus

- Value = /> 6.1% require confirmation of diagnosis by measurement of fasting blood glucose

- At rates between 5.5% and 6% can be ruled out diabetes in people with moderate risk, but not in those at high risk.
